What did the three women have in common? They are
siblings or friends and listen to the soothing radio voice of Jared Snow on WCIC
Providence, in the heart of the night. Savannah Smith is entranced with the sexy voice
to wile away the lonely hours of the night. She is looking at her thirty first birthday
and feeling sad and lonely that she has no great love in her life and no family. What she
does have is a high-powered position as a lawyer with the state attorney generals
office.
Her twin sister, Susan, also listens to Jared Snow in the early hours. Since her
husband left her a year ago, she drinks too much, envies her sister and feels sorry for
herself.
Megan Vandermeer is a good friend of both Savannah and Susan. She fell in love and
married a wealthy older man, Will, and expected an easy life of luxury but instead, her
husband is having financial problems and hanging on to his wealthy façade by a thread.
Will arrives at the attorney generals office in a dither, telling them that Megan
has been kidnapped and that he has received a ransom note demanding three million dollars.
Because he is insured, he is able to pay the kidnapper but he is frantic that his wife
will not be returned alive. He refuses to go to the police and instead asks for help from
his friends. Savannah agrees to help and calls in two policemen-friends, Sam and Hank, to
help look for clues and figure how to pay the ransom. When Susan and Sam make eye contact,
the air sizzles between them.
Savannah is intrigued with the note from the kidnapper because the wording is very much
what is used on the radio show they all listen to. She meets Jared Snow and finds him
impossibly handsome and sexy.
Although HEART OF THE NIGHT is suspenseful, it is basically a romance. Jared and Sam
are both wonderful characters, warm, trustworthy, handsome, sexy wow!! The book is
sizzling and steamy hot. Although Susan has a few problems, the reader soon realizes that
she is a woman in crisis and needs to find her way through her unhappiness while her twin,
Savannah, always seems to know the right way. Sibling rivalries are unveiled as the two
work out their problems with each other. Megan is also a woman with serious problems,
yearning for an easier and more comfortable life and instead, finding concerns and
terrible trauma turning her life upside-down. As the hunt goes on to find the kidnapper,
problems are being worked out in the lives of the three friends.
As always, Barbara Delinsky, has written a page-turner leaving the reader with a good
feeling as everything comes together at the end of HEART OF THE NIGHT. Written in 1988,
she had that delicate touch to make a best seller and a reissue in 2003. The novel still
feels fresh and current and is an excellent read.
