Harkening
is
a thoroughly delightful collection of stories from author Howard-Johnson, written in her
usual quaint style, of a gentler time stories, in some cases, that have been passed
down through the generations. Others are particular vignettes of memories the author holds
dear to her heart.
The characters
that populate these stories are an eclectic mix her mother, whom she calls
Mom-Bertie and Gram-Lucretia, and her grandfather, Grandfather-M, and also a host of
brothers and sisters that encourage smiles and nods of understanding from readers who have
been there or done that.
The grandeur and
history of Utah plays an integral role in these stories stories which are really a
history of a family and the joys and heartaches experienced by the members of that family,
which the author has generously and graciously shared.
Ms. Howard-Johnson
utilizes a gentle and endearing writing style that will evoke fond memories of our own
pasts guaranteed. Though meant as sequels to continue some of the tales from
characters in the authors first book, This is the Place, the reader is
not left out if that one hasnt been read yet. Harkening A Collection
of Stories Remembered can, and does, stand out on its own a fast, tender
read that will soothe, uplift and entertain all at the same time.
