Foxs Earth is a magnificent Georgia mansion. The
house and the prestigious Fox family become a focal point in the book. In 1903, after an
eye opening discussion with her beaten mother, young Ruth Yancey decides she will never
let a man use her, as her father uses her mom. Foxs earth and its inhabitants obsess
Ruth.
Later in life, Ruth, now Ruth Yancey Fox, has everything she had dreamed. She has
manipulated into the family and home she so long lusted after. Ruth possesses all the evil
and ugly attributes of her abusive father, and rules her family with an iron fist. Ruth
will get everything she wants, one way or another. Life in Foxs Earth is not
pleasant, warm or inviting.
Although Ruth is a character I cant exactly bond with, author Anne Rivers Siddons
has done an excellent job of creating a fascinating old south family saga fascinating.
Although, I dont know how Ms. Siddons lived with Ruth while writing the story.
FOXS EARTH brims with sex, scandal, and the degradation of human experience. While
it is a compelling book to read, it is not pleasant. Only until close to the end when it
seems Ruths secrets will be revealed does the reader feel some sense of positive
motives and outcomes.
