In DEVONSHIRE, Lynne Connolly continues the romance of
Richard and Rose, the characters she introduced in her first book, YORKSHIRE. Like her
previous novel, this is more than a simple romance. Danger, suspense, and intrigue menace
not only Richard and Rose, but the entire countryside.
Rose Golightly, although soon to become a countess, is still unsure of her attractiveness
and worth. Her personality grows and matures as she faces threats with courage and
graceand as she realizes the depth of Richard's love for her.
Richard Kerre discloses more of himself in this book of the series. He tells Rose secrets
that few people know about him and his concerns. But in addition to showing his tender
feelings, he also reveals his capability for violence.
Rose returns to the country manor in Devonshire to prepare for her elaborate nuptials. She
is nervous about her upcoming wedding and still has doubts about Richard's ability to be
faithful and her own ability to hold him. She will soon learn that her future husband
loves her completely and unconditionally. Richard spends time in Devonshire getting to
knowand sometimes baitingRose's neighbors. I especially enjoyed his table
flirting with Miss Terry, who had in the past made Rose's life miserable. Richard caused
Miss Terry much embarrassment, mostly by encouraging her to be herself! When Richard
learns that smugglers are causing problems for Rose's neighbors, he becomes involved in
protecting them. He has secret connections that enable him to outwit the smugglers. Rose
asks Richard that there be no secrets between them and he promises that he will withhold
nothing from her. She finds that she must also keep nothing from him, no matter how
painful. And she learns that his love is strong enough to overcome all obstacles.
This book kept me interested and excited, totally wrapped up in Rose's perils. There is
some violence which bothered me, but I enjoyed the plot and the development of characters,
especially the relationship between Rose and her childhood friend Tom. Throughout the
book, Lord Strang's steadfastness in his love for Rose is heart-warming. I can hardly wait
to read VENICE, the next book in this series.Reviewed by
