Susan Grant has done it again! From
the winner of the 2002 Daphne Du Maurier award for romantic suspense comes a stellar adventure, which will amaze the readers
and keep them highly entertained! Simply
out-of-this-world! The last thing First Officer Jordan Cady expects on a
routine flight from Honolulu to San Francisco is the odd looking storm on the radar, which
surprisingly enough, seems to be following them. After 9/11, the flight crew is ready to
deal with any terrorist attempt, but what then happens to them is literally beyond belief.
One moment, they are trying to evade the storm; the next, the storm has swallowed
them up. The captain is dead, and Jordan, a thirty-two year old single mom
who juggled flying for a living with raising a six-year-old unexpectedly finds herself promoted to captain and the safety of all
the people onboard becomes her responsibility. Everyone on board is initially inclined to believe that they have been the victims of some sort of a hijack attempt. But what sort of a hijack is this where a Boeing 747 is swallowed in its entirety into a black nothingness? Jordan and people on board United Flight 58 are in for a rude shock when they discover that they are in the unique position of being the victims of a wholesale alien abduction. Actually, an alien rescue, as Káo Vantaar-Moray, the battle-scarred son of the starship commander informs them. Theyre given the shattering news that Earth no longer exists as it was destroyed in a comet shower, just moments after their aircraft was rescued. And they are, as such, the only earth people to survive. After a painful period of
adjustment, they start the process of adapting to this alien civilization by learning
their language and culture. Jordan and Káo find
themselves increasingly attracted to each other, even as the war between the Alliance and
the Talagars escalates. But their ultimate loyalties lie with their own people. Will this
fledgling romance survive the harsh realities of life and war? Are they truly being
rescued or is there some alien conspiracy afoot? Susan Grant takes aviation romance to new heights! With spell-binding build-up of suspense, followed by
startling developments, she keeps the readers fascinated and engrossed in what new amazing
event the next page will bring. Yes, there are aliens in this book. But Grants
aliens are not little green men (thank god!) - they are humans who look just like us. They
are, however, technologically light-years ahead with a lot of fancy gizmos and cool
gadgets and star ships! Still they also have wars and villains. Káo, the hero, is a really cool guy, who has undergone
a lot of trauma but worships his adopted father, Moran. Jordans character is truly
remarkable, as she exhibits a high level of courage in the face of adversity, and is an
able leader. She will long remain in my memory as one gutsy lady, whom not even an alien
can lay low. The passion between Káo and Jordan is fiery and touching. The twist in the plot towards the end is also highly unexpected. Grant
has done a marvelous job of the whole thing and being a pilot herself, brings a depth of
reality to the whole fantastic plot. A
mind-blowing read! Utterly riveting! What an absolute treat for romance and sci-fi readers
everywhere!! NOTE
: When I first saw this book, I was reminded of a book by the same title and similar theme
by the renowned author Carl Sagan. I asked Susan Grant about this coincidence, & this
is what this excellent author had to say: - "When my editor and I decided on the title, we did it hoping to evoke all the glory that is the Sagan masterwork, its political scientific appeal, plus the double entendre of human physical and romantic contact. We felt it fit the book." And I have to
say, it does!
