THE CHRISTMAS KITE will become one of those must read
seasonal books. It is a story of hope, forgiveness, and self-sacrifice. But, mostly, it is
a story of love.
Jordan Bard was once a College Professor with a wonderful life including a beautiful wife
and a beautiful son. His life was cruelly ripped away and he turned his back to God, who
he felt left him when he needed him most. Jordan lives now in a beach house, creating
beautifully colored kites. He is sheltered away from the world, except for the company of
his Irish setter, Dooley. Jordan builds masterpieces and a wall around his heart. Until
eight year old, Dusten MacAuley Hayden (Mac) strolls on the beach with his mom.
Meara Hayden is a widow. Her Down syndrome son, Mac, has always been her life and love.
Even when her husband and his family rejected Mac when the discovered he was less than
what they consider perfect. The wealthy Hayden family has practically imprisoned Meara and
Mac, but now, they are free. Meara wants so much for her loving son. But, mostly she wants
freedom. When she and Mac stumble across private property on the beach, she tries to
befriend the kite flying man. His angry, bitter attitude makes her defensive. But, Mac,
who never met a stranger in his life, wants to play with the dog, and talk with the
fascinating man who flies the colorful crafts.
Meara is Irish born, and came to America in hopes of finding the American dream. She found
instead a nightmare, but her faith in God and trust in the plan He had for her life keeps
her going. Eventually, Meara and Mac break through Jordans walls, and Meara
convinces him to read the bible, again.
Will Jordan be able to forgive himself? Will Meara trust him with her heart and her son
after she learns his secret? He doesnt think so.
We all struggle in life. I sometimes wonder how people make it without a faith in God.
Sometimes life would seem very bleak if there was nothing more than this. Ms. Martin does
an excellent job of showing us real life and real hurts healed with a real God. A God who
loves us beyond anything we could love ourselves.
I especially enjoyed Jordan. Too many times in fiction, the hero is so charming I wonder
how anyone could not fall for them. Jordan is bitter, angry, and hurt. He carries a burden
of guilt and hes afraid to open up again. I think anyone could relate to him.
Meara loves her son. She honestly feels he is a blessing, and her patient and careful ways
are evident in how she lives.
I cant imagine anyone reading this book will not be blessed by it. Get a copy to
give as a gift, too. Ms. Martin is a gifted and talented author, whose works have won
awards and much praise.
I highly recommend THE CHRISTMAS KITE. A sweet touching story of love.
